Hydration for animal skin: the power of the right ingredients

In the groomer you see it regularly: dogs, cats or rabbits with dry skin. Sometimes the skin is already dry upon entry, sometimes after washing you notice that the skin feels tight or flaky. Well-hydrated skin is essential for the animal's comfort and health. But how do you achieve that in an effective and safe way?

The secret lies in the right combination of three groups of ingredients: humectants, emollients and occlusives. Each of these ingredients contributes uniquely to healthy, well-hydrated skin.

Humectants - moisture binders for the skin

Humectants are substances that attract moisture from the environment and the deeper skin layers. They help prevent dehydration and support the skin's natural hydration level.

Well-known humectants include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea, and oatmeal extract. These ingredients typically have a light, watery texture and are quickly absorbed by the skin. They are particularly suitable for animals with dry or sensitive skin because they help restore moisture balance.

  • Hyaluronic Acid has the ability to retain water up to 1,000 times its own weight. This helps keep the skin supple and maintain elasticity.
  • Oatmeal (Avena sativa) forms a protective layer on the skin, helps retain moisture and supports a stable pH. It contains antioxidants and emollients that contribute to a soothing effect.
  • Urea not only moisturizes, but at a concentration of 10% or higher also helps to loosen dead skin cells, reducing flaking. Urea also supports healthy skin flora thanks to its antimicrobial properties.

Occlusives - protection against moisture loss

Occlusives form an occlusive layer on the skin that prevents evaporation of moisture. This makes them ideally suited for use on dry, bald or sensitive areas, such as the soles of feet and noses.

  • Vaseline (petrolatum) is a classic occlusive ingredient. It seals the skin without irritating it, but can be sticky and attract dirt.
  • Silicone also form a protective barrier, but still allow oxygen and air to pass through. This keeps them comfortable on the skin. Silicone is also water-repellent, protecting it from outside influences.

Summary

Healthy skin care for animals is all about the right balance of humectants, emollients and occlusives. Each ingredient group has its own function:

  • Humectants attract and retain moisture in the skin.
  • Emollients replenish the fats in the skin and make the skin supple.
  • Occlusives keep moisture from evaporating.
