When the skin barrier is disrupted, dogs can develop symptoms more quickly. This causes increased exposure to allergens, pathogens and toxins. Microbes attach more easily to the skin and there is increased epidermal water loss (TEWL). In animals with skin problems, mainly in atopic dermatitis, almost all aspects of the skin are affected.
